Light Bulb

!±8± Light Bulb

We revel in the beauty of what we see all around us. We admire flowers, see ourselves in the mirror, and consider ourselves lucky to have optical sensation. But we don't always remember that it is light reflected from the surface of objects that enables us to see them. Pioneers of light technology like Sir Joseph Swan (1878) and Thomas Edison (1879) helped humankind switch its domestic and commercial light sources from oil lamps and candles to light bulbs.

The technology in light bulbs has evolved since the time of Edison to include better quality incandescent bulbs, halogen bulbs, discharge bulbs, florescent bulbs, and so on. However, the 'Edison caps' are still used in certain bulbs, and most use the same simple materials and technology with a few variations and modifications. Light bulbs can be used for domestic purpose or commercial use, in cars, flashlights, and any form of business. Light bulbs can also be designed to emit colored light.

Light bulbs are typically made of two metal links at the base of the glass (or quartz in case of halogen) bulb. When these metals come in contact with a running electric current or batteries (in flash lights), the electricity is transmitted to the filament. The bulb is filled with an inert gas like argon (premium gas like krypton can also be used) to prevent the filament from getting oxidized from contact with oxygen. The filament is made of a metal, tungsten, which has an exceptionally high melting point.

The running electric current heats up the filament to a very high temperature (2,000 degrees Celsius) and the filament radiates excess energy as both heat and a large quantity of visible and invisible light. Light is thus a radiation or emission of excessive energy by atoms.

The atoms in the filament, like all other atoms, have a nucleus, and electrons that revolve around the nucleus in different orbits. When the electrons are activated by surplus energy (by collision with other atoms due to high temperature in filament) they jump away from the nucleus to a different orbit of greater energy level.

However, these artificially stimulated electrons are unstable and they emit excess energy in form of light energy, i.e., photons. Photons do not possess any mass, but have momentum and energy. The different techniques used to excite the atoms lead to the generation of different wavelengths, and hence, different colors of light. The presence of a gas enables the evaporated particles of the filament to bounce back to the filament.

Light bulbs which are aging or in bad condition generally fuse when they are switched on. This is because a tungsten filament (especially those which are worn out or thinned out) has low resistance to electricity when it is cold. When the current is switched on the filament is still in the process of heating up and building resistance, and so the filament breaks and the bulb fuses.

Most bulbs used for domestic purposes have a built-in fuse to prevent the main current from tripping. The filament thins out because sometimes, due to prolonged use, the high temperature in the filament results in the evaporation of the atoms. Despite the high light and energy efficiency of halogen and florescent bulbs, many people still favor the convectional incandescent bulbs because they are supposed to emit a warmer light.

However, times have changed, and variously colored fluorescent and efficient halogen bulbs have come into the market. From power-saving bulbs that consume less electricity and give better outputs to those that are environmentally friendly, the market is full of options. Halogen bulbs are generally a little more expensive and, due to the premium gas in them, may be dangerous if not handled according to guidelines.

GET LAMP: The Text Adventure Documentary

Google Tech Talk (more below) March 7, 2011 Presented by Jason Scott. ABSTRACT Jason Scott will talk about making the documentary and we'll be screening some portion of the film. www.getlamp.com In the early years of the microcomputer, a special kind of game was being played. With limited sound, simple graphics, and tiny amounts of computing power, the first games on home computers would hardly raise an eyebrow in the modern era of photorealism and surround sound. In a world of Quake, Half-Life and Halo, it is expected that a successful game must be loud, fast, and full of blazing life-like action. But in the early 1980s, an entire industry rose over the telling of tales, the solving of intricate puzzles and the art of writing. Like living books, these games described fantastic worlds to their readers, and then invited them to live within them. They were called "computer adventure games", and they used the most powerful graphics processor in the world: the human mind. Rising from side projects at universities and engineering companies, adventure games would describe a place, and then ask what to do next. They presented puzzles, tricks and traps to be overcome. They were filled with suspense, humor and sadness. And they offered a unique type of joy as players discovered how to negotiate the obstacles and think their way to victory. These players have carried their memories of these text adventures to the modern day, and a whole new generation of authors have taken up the ...

Dog Urine Stains and Odor

!±8± Dog Urine Stains and Odor

If you have ever house-broken a puppy, you know that accidents are a part of the process. If training isn't successful right away, those little accidents add up over time and the result is a carpet that begins to reek of dog urine. Older dogs are also prone to accidents and can even have problems with leaking while they are asleep. While dog urine isn't quite as potent smelling as cat urine can be, the smell is still recognizable and can linger just as long. Some of the components in dog urine include water, urea, hormones and ammonia. Dog urine tends to smell sweeter and less ammonia-like than cat urine but can be just as difficult to remove.

The first step in avoiding urine stains is always prevention. Properly training your dog is the most important way to prevent problems. Dog trainers strongly recommend crate training in order to help a dog learn how to control its bladder. The puppy or adult dog that isn't already house-trained benefits by being kept for short periods of time in a dog crate where the animal is comfortable but doesn't have enough room to squat in order to urinate or defecate. In time, the dog is able to hold its bladder for longer periods of time, and begins to associate the outside with relieving itself. If done properly and with the correct rewards, the animal will become house-broken.

In cities with apartment buildings that are tens of stories high, special indoor mats designed to hold urine are the place where dogs are taught to go during the crating period as the time it takes to get outdoors is too long to hold it for most puppies. Other applications for these types of mats include homes with people who are too old or disabled to let their dogs out or homes with geriatric pets. Odor can be a problem with these indoor mats and sometimes, the animal will still have problems going in the designated place. In these instances, odor and stain control are still necessary despite the best intentions of the pet owner.

The second step after prevention is to try to locate all of the areas affected by a dog that has urinated inappropriately. On some carpets, it can be hard to detect wet areas or areas that are old and have already dried. The best way to find all of the areas is to use a special black light UV flashlight designed to illuminate the areas where organic materials have seeped into the carpet. When used in the dark, these affected areas will glow a bright white or yellow in comparison to areas that have not been saturated. Once the areas have been located, it is much easier to spot treat with the appropriate products.

Many home remedies have been prescribed to try to remove dog urine stains, but the danger in these is that damage can be done unintentionally to the carpet or rug that is being cleaned. Many of these home concoctions can end up making the stain and smell worse or can bleach the color right out of the material. Solutions containing hydrogen peroxide are generally not recommended for this reason.

The best way to get to the root of the stain or odor is to digest it with an enzyme product. These are generally safe for both pets and humans and will not damage carpeting or material the way that some home remedies can. Make sure to follow the directions on the packaging and always test the solution in an inconspicuous spot to make sure that it is appropriate for use in your particular situation.

Halloween Party Games: A Devilishly Good Time!

!±8± Halloween Party Games: A Devilishly Good Time!

When your children are too old for trick or treating, and too young for unsupervised Halloween parties, it is tough to pick Halloween party games and themes that do not seem too "young" to those trying so hard to seem "adult"... My children solved the problem for me by creating their own games, and taking charge of the Halloween Party Games themselves.

Consider hiring a "genuine" Gypsy fortune teller, or a tarot card reader for an entertaining Halloween party game of seeing into the future. Block off a small cubicle with room dividers or curtains. Most teens seriously reject the idea of parents being present at their party, but the gypsy/tarot reader just became your chaperone, and the kids won't even realize it even better if you can block off strategically placed dividers for both the fortune teller, and the tarot reader. Then you have two chaperones, and it is always best if parents have to stick their heads in occasionally to refill the witch's brew pot, or bring in fresh pizza.

No matter how old these kids want to be, they will all love a Halloween party game where their fortunes are told, or their cards read. Coordinate a séance, and enlist the aid of some collaborators, to make things go bump in the night. Throw in an Ouija board, and your Halloween Party Games just got cool!

Halloween party games of Twister, black light style, are always fun, and a back yard Halloween party game of flashlight tag is good for teens as well. Keep the music loud, leave lots of room for dancing, throw in plenty of food, lots of witches brew, limit what appears to be direct supervision, by disguising your peaks in as food and drink checks, and you have a Halloween Party, and Halloween party games sure to please even the most discerning teen!
